What went well, what didn't go well, what could be done to improve for 2013?

Okay, how's about this - I honestly wonder if I'll be able to have children after Bryce Corrion hit me square in the groin from 10 feet out.

For day 2 matches I feel like we need more than just the head referee and the 2 counters, because a lot of times the counters ARE going to miss calls, which is unfortunately the error of human nature. And asking the head ref to see EVERYTHING is kind of ridiculous, especially in a big game like CMU/GVSU GVSU/SVSU etc etc, when emotions are running through the ceiling and out of the gym lol
Having 2 extra line judges would definitely help out majorly to avoid missed calls.
Edit- Bomis you're a trooper for taking that hit and keeping the game moving while you were on the ground writhing in pain haha, but i'm not sure who got hurt worse, you there or yesterday when the JMU kid that was a counter got hit in the nuts during the CMU/Kent St. game hahaha

I agree with Wes. I know that Spencer said that we had a lot of refs drop, but we should have had 2 head refs and counters for at least the quarterfinals on. Other than that, the refereeing was pretty good.

For that I apologize to you guys.

Bomis did a great job (I'm going to regret saying that, his head is going to get HUGE). I honestly feel like he was able to keep control of our courts. This has been the best officiating in all the years past at nationals (in my experience anyways). Day two Greg did a great job for us during the MSU game too. I wish I could type more about the officiating but my fingers and body hurts too much. Hats off to anyone who played more than 4 games this weekend, I can barely move haha

overall the reffing situation was pretty good. obviously there are going to be opportunities where a ref won't be able to see a call and somebody takes advantage of it and fails to go out, but thats just an honesty issue like sweet said. we can't expect every ref to make every call.
at least the refs knew the rulebook this year, and at least they cared about making the game fair. past that i dont think we can ask for much else.

Personally I think this year officiating was very good. Thought you'd never hear that from me right? Everytime there was an issue, even if it started by both teams yelling at each other, the refs we had would hear both sides. take both sides into account along with what they saw and come up with the best resolution to the situation. It very much helped that they knew the rulebook to help them with the decision.
I feel like we didn't have that many stoppages in the GVSU/SVSU game, but maybe that was because it was so intense and my adrenaline was high. I thought the captains and the refs worked together to come up with solutions to every problem that came along.
Overall great job and definitely need to keep alumni coming back to ref if they can.

after our game at MDC, any game we played felt fast... Speaking only for my officiating crews, we made a conscious effort to keep an eye on the game clock whenever possible. The prevalence of comments like "It's their throw" underpins the fact that strategy is at play in these games, and that there is a premium for a team being coordinated enough, or just plain aggressive enough, that they keep the game moving - the premium being that they do not trigger a shot clock violation and get assaulted by rubber balls. We as officials have to make sure not to devalue that premium by slowing down the shotclock to the extent that it's almost at half speed.
