So while we were watching the fantastic GVSU/SVSU semifinal game this weekend, one of my guys said once the game ended "that was anti-climatic" and a lot of fans didn't really understand that SVSU won until they got it explained to them.
I know that the captain's meeting is like 363 days away, but I would like to propose a possible rule change being that we play 5v5 or 6v6 dodgeball in the case of OT. Your best 5 or 6 vs my best. I feel like that would be a lot more entertaining than the typical OT point (for example, WKU vs Kent State) where once you get to like a 3 or 4 man advantage people just sit on the balls.
I understand that the OT rule is made for tournament reasons so that people do not set the time back a whole lot, but if we did 5v5 or 6v6 with everyone on the 10 clock the whole time then I feel it would take around 10 minutes per point (the same as the current OT.)
I just feel it makes a more compelling finale than "oh we have 11 guys left and you have 10, we win".
Thoughts? Other ideas?

I would support something like that 5vs5 or 6vs6.
I know this might be too much change for people to handle but I would also maybe think of reducing the amount of dodgeballs on the court to allow for more action with more open throws to be had, that would also handle the issue of taking lots of time if it were to be an untimed overtime which I believe it should be

I like 6vs6, seven balls lined up 0-2-3-2-0, fixed ten second shot clock (even if you catch a 6th player in), and play until one side wins.

I think that would be great for overtime rules

Would it be possible to do a vote like what we did last year for the opening rush so we can implement this before the 2012-2013 season?

Would the opening rush remain the same for OT? It was pretty common this nationals for 2 or 3 people to get out right off the bat. This might make the OT too short. If we are going for a lot of excitement that may be a problem. It also could be that only having 7 balls would solve that problem. Just something to think about.
How many timeouts would we have for OT if we did that? And would we limit how many times you could sub in players? Or would it stay as long as you called a timeout you can sub in for active players? Too many chances to sub could drag out OT by throwing fresh players into the game.

We could do 6 balls, each team starts with 3 and eliminate the opening rush in it's entirety (only for OT). Similar to how college football OT is just start at the 35 or whatever.
As far as timeouts I'd say keep whatever timeout rule we currently have for OT (1 timeout for OT apparently now that I've looked at the rules) and if you want to sub, you can sub.

i really like this idea as well. maybe we could just start each team with two balls instead of rushing for them. that way there is still some tension over the middle balls.
the other reason i really like this is it makes people throw the ball. sitting on the balls after getting a one man advantage isn't dodgeball in my opinion.

Hahaha this might work, it reminds me of an NHL Shootout or Over time. Your best vs my best.

This would be AWESOME. We all know dodgeball has it's skill level throughout the various teams but I believe that each team has it's elite core, some bigger than others. Putting the best against the best from each team would make for one hell of an overtime. Reffing it would be a pain in the was though..

Zigmas, is there a way we could host a vote for this ASAP for next season? Similar to what we did with the opening rush last year?

Lets not jump our guns though, lets make sure everyone else in the NCDA knows whats been proposed. Try to get more captains to this thread and post.

I'll put out an email about this introducing the discussion in this thread, then an email asking for a quorum to change it, then an email if a majority of member-teams would like to change the rule. Pretty much the same as the Opening Rush rule last season.

Here are some more options....
Ten minute regular overtime, if no point is scored then do an untimed 6v6 game
Or
15v15 untimed, go until one team gets the point
