Tournament:
JMU's Big East-Appalachian Super Tournament or more aptly named BEAST II.
Tagline:
One awesome acronym. 4 unnecessary words.
Date:
February 16, 2013
Location:
The ever so picturesque campus of James Madison University. More specifically, the University Recreation Center on campus.
Address of UREC:
701 Driver Drive, Harrisonburg, VA 22801
Recommended Parking Lots:
Convo D or G, D8, C9, P
web.jmu.edu/parking/parkingmap.pdf << Parking/Building Map
Look for "University Recreation Center" if you are parking in a Convo lot or D8, just follow the paths towards the front of UREC. If you are parking in C9 or P, you will have to walk through the tunnel that cuts under I-81 and you should see the entrance off to your left.
Teams Attending:
James Madison University[JMU] - VA - Confirmed: Host
Virginia Commonwealth University[VCU] - VA - Confirmed: 12/16
Saginaw Valley State University[SVSU] - MI - Confirmed: 12/3
Kent State University[KSU] - OH - Confirmed: 12/3
Towson University[TU] - MD - Confirmed: 12/6
Miami University[MU] - OH - Confirmed: 12/3
Western Kentucky University[WKU] - KY - Interested
Tournament Fees:
The tournament fees are $30. We are requiring payment in advance from teams, because we didn't get the tournament fees from some teams last year. If your team is ordering t-shirts or food, please send that money with the tournament fees.
Places to Stay:
Best place to stay in Harrisonburg in respect to the university recreation center, the parties, and closest off the highway, you want to stay in the Days Inn off of 81. It's 5-minute walking distance from the gym, so driving it's literally seconds. Rates are $63 a night there, a few teams stayed there last year.
If you are looking for literally the cheapest hotel possible, I would check the Motel 6 on East Market. I'm pretty sure the last time I checked, it was $39 a night there. A little bit more of a drive, but it isn't bad at all.
Social:
There will be a house party following the chaos that is the BEASTournament at a fellow JMU Dodgeball member's apartment. The party, 'BIDDIEFEST 2K13' will be the highlight of our night as three girl members of our team have their birthday within the same week of each other. If your team is interested in attending, contact Chris so we know how to plan for your arrival
Schedule:
Okay, so one issue we ran into last year is that we didn't really have enough time in the schedule to fit everything well in place, so we were unable to get some games in. So BEAST2 will definitely have a more realistic schedule in advance.
Last year, we had a few issues with some teams and how they didn't get all the matchups they wanted. Again, our goal is to give a chance for all teams to play some different teams that they won't necessarily come across in a weekend round robin tournament. We had an issue with getting teams to attend last year, but this year is a lot more promising, with some teams notifying me literally a week after nationals that they wanted to visit VA in 2013.
Of course we want to provide local teams (Towson, VCU, Maryland) priority because they didn't get out to play all too much, but we will also be going after teams that don't mind traveling the distance to play here, and in fact, we encourage it.
Another issue we ran into was that not many teams really helped out with refereeing the games. Any team that registers must understand that during that time block where they might be off, that we will need assistance with referreing the matches. It's too rediculous trying to teach the referrees here how we play dodgeball.
Schedule of Events:
8:00-8:30a Set-up
8:30-9:00a Captain's Meeting
There are seven blocks of games that you can play in which gives you enough for at least four varsity matches, and two blocks for break. Teams at break are expected to serve as referees for matches that are currently in play.
Shirts:
Last year we had a couple teams interested in tournament shirts, but we were never able to reach the minimum order. I will create a pre-order form when we get a quote from our T-Shirt guy, I would expect the shirts to cost around $7, but our mock-up from last year looks sick, so it'll definitely be worth getting.
This is this year's design. Please pardon the picture quality, I just took the picture of the design that we had on file with my iPhone...
Lunch:
We are going to order pizza because that seemed like it worked out for itself last tournament. Each pizza will probably cost about $5, so when we go to collect money, just notify us how many pizzas you would like.
