Per Colin O’Brien:
3.1.4.2 Early Halftime - If a point has been scored with less than 5:00 minutes remaining in the first half, halftime will go into effect with the remaining time being added to the second half.
Rationale: 5 minutes out of 25 minutes presents a nice fraction of one-fifth. Adding one more minute to the rollover amount will prevent more situations of meaningless dodgeball.

This is a good point to use the real data we have on point duration to help make an informed decision on this one. But off hand I think 5 min is a good amount of time but not generally result in a point.

+1. A great idea.

I also had an idea from Zig's comment about a shorter game with no halftime in the thread for a shorter shot clock.
What if we got rid of halftime as it is currently established. What if instead of 25 minute halfs, we have a 50 minute game. There is still a 5 minute break midway through the game, after which the teams change sides. This break could occur at the end of the first point after the 20 minute mark. I know there would be concern over fairness in that some gyms have advantageous sides, so one team having one side for more time than the other may cause unrest. To counteract that, we could perhaps also institute a rule that after 25 minutes, the first stoppage in play will result in the teams switching sides if they have not already. If we really wanted to make sure the teams would have a similar time on each side, we could even say that just at the 25 minute mark, time is called and the teams switch sides. If this was the case, I would still argue for the 5 minute break to take place between points rather than at this 25 minute mark, as to not disrupt the play of the point. I do feel that a 5 minute break is vital both for stamina and to give teams a chance to regroup.
I proposed this initial rule change of 4 minutes to 5 minute early halftime to get rid of meaningless dodgeball. I feel a change in the conventional half system to a whole game of 50 minutes with a break built in would result in even less meaningless dodgeball, as teams would really only try to kill points at the end of the game, instead of the end of each half.

In a fireside chat we had the idea that after every point, the teams change sides.
More and more i like the idea of killing halftime, if not giving timeouts a longer duration or placing it after a point scored 20 minutes into the game. (I think 20 minutes in is better than 25, based on reasoning of our current early halftime ruling and that a point is not likely to be scored in 4-5 minutes.)

So to steal from your great idea my proposal would be - Keep the two 25 minute halves with a half time so players can get a rest. However instead of the 4 or 5 minute rule being added on to the next half we just carry the current point over to the next half as soon as the first 25 minute half expires. Say Team A has 12 players left at the end of half, Team B has 9, teams switch sides and Team A starts with 12 players and Team B starts with 9. We can work out the kinks later like if substitutions are allowed etc, but this is a great way to stop teams from scoring the opening point and then trying to just kill the rest of the half. It also will increase scoring, force teams to be competitive the entire 25 minutes of the first half, and can create some interesting second half starts.

Spencer, I like it. The only thing I would add to it is to perhaps adopt the early halftime rule and give the teams the option of changing sides and taking halftime after a point is scored between 20-25 minutes into the game. That way, the flow of the point would not be broken. It would be an option though and both teams would have to agree.
