Per Felix Perrone:
3.3.4.3.4 Five Man Rule Catch Reset - If a team has five or fewer active players on the court and a shotclock of 10, a direct catch will reset their shotclock.
Rationale: I think it would be an interesting reward for teams who catch when the chips are down. Plus it doesn't stop play for a shotclock violation when it is 1 vs 6 and the lone player makes a catch but cannot throw within 10 seconds.
There would also need to be a clause for OT, I haven't decided what to do with OT. I guess the same rule would apply? Maybe in OT it could be when the team has 2 or fewer players could a catch reset the clock.
Just throwing out ideas on this beautiful Sunday.

I love this idea. Anything to increase the value of a catch is good in my book.

I agree that it would be a cool incentive for catching and lets a team have a better shot at making a comeback. Yet I also see this as a way for the game to drag on which the goal of many proposed changes this year is to speed up the game. Giving the team with only a few players a new shot clock from a catch means they get to play stall ball as the opposing team would lack at least 1 ball coming back to them from a throw and an attempt to get a player out by catching that throw. Although I like it as a catcher, I feel that it gives a catch in this situation a little to much power and allows a down team a better opportunity to drain the clock.

I see your point, but I don't think it will affect the game as much as you think. If say it's like 8 on 1, and the 1 already has the majority of the balls (which is actually quite common), then him/her getting a catch doesn't really give them a leg up on the other team any more than that ball being thrown harmlessly in front of their feet, or more typically, 8 feet over their head. I think this would purely speed the game up, and give the team that is down a little more of a helping hand in making a comeback in the point. Their shot clock being reset would not be such a game changer for the other team since the team with the man advantage typically are going to try and run the team with few players left's shot clock up as high as possible before throwing anyway. And even if it's like 3 on 2 or 4 on 1 or 2 on 1 or something, that isn't really going to be a game changer in that situation either, imo.

Wes, I was just trying to throw out any pros or cons I saw to this rule change to maybe spark the conversation for this proposal. I do agree with you completely though. I don't think it would really be a situation/game changer in the long run. Which is another reason I why I dont think we need this rule change, or at least dont need it immediately.
