UK Invitational 2012 Information
This year there will be 6 participating teams, which are: UK, UL, Miami, JMU, BGSU and Kent St.
Where Is It?
Due to court restrictions this year it will not be in the larger facility it was held in last year and will instead be held in Alumni Gym. Alumni Gym is on the corner of South Limestone Street and Avenue of Champions (Euclid Avenue)which is the northern part of campus. The best location to park would be across the street in the diagonal employee lot (which is to the north east I believe, I am laying on my couch slightly under the weather.) If you are mapquesting it you could probably find a good read on “Memorial Gym.”
Alumni Gym was used as the main basketball venue decades and decades ago. (Adolf Rupp coached in this gym!) Sadly, this gym is much like it was back then and is now considered–outdated! However, we will attempt to make the best of our venue! Because we are playing in this venue we will only be able to play one game at a time. Because of this we will have to have a lot of structure in the day.
How Is The Tournament Set-Up?
There will be two pools. Pool A Pool B UK Kent St. BGSU Miami JMU UL
Each team will play the other two teams in their pool and then face an opposing member of the opposite pool that is judged based upon both team’s pool-play record.
For example if Pool A had teams Q, R and S. and Pool B had teams X, Y and Z. Q beats R X beats Y Q beats S X beats Z R beats S Y beats Z Then the next three games would have S and Z playing for 5th place. R and Y playing for 3rd place and Q and X playing for 1st place. If for some reason that one pool has a tie then the team that has the largest point differential will beat out the lower point differential. (If Q beat R 5-1 then they would gain a plus 4 differential; if S beats Q 3-2 then Q would have a minus 1 differential. Which leaves them with a plus 3 differential.) IF the differential is tied the team that has the most scored points moves on. IF the contingency fails, the team that won the head to head moves on.
Overtimes will be handled by NCDA rules.
What Does The Schedule Look Like?
9:00 UK vs. JMU 10:00 Kent St. vs. UL 11:00 JMU vs. BGSU 12:00 FOOD IN CATS DEN 12:30 LAST MAN STANDING COMPETITION 1:00 Miami vs. Kent. St 2:00 UK vs. BGSU 3:00 Miami vs. UL 4:00 5th PLACE MATCH 5:00 3rd PLACE MATCH 6:00 1st PLACE MATCH
Each game will have two 25 minute halves with one three minute halftime. Which only gives us five minutes to transition between games. So we will have to stay on our toes and try and be punctual! If a team is late to arrive for their match and they hold up the schedule…for example, if team X shows up late then I will award a point for team Y every two minutes they are late. (I am giving everyone a two-minute freebie.) If a team is late, it will cut out some of the half time-time.
Only 1st Place team will receive a trophy, so good luck!
Cats Den
Reading the schedule you probably read Cats Den and thought, “What is that?” The Cats Den is a room in UK’s Student Center, which will be open from 11:45-4:30. UK players will be able to show the way and it is a 45 second walk from the gym where we will be playing. There will be drinks, pizza and chips there. (I only had $200 worth to spend on food so don’t eat a whole pizza by yourself.) There will also be ping-pong tables, pool tables, xbox’s and etc. for the teams to use during that time. So, teams that have a few hours off can go chill and play video games and eat some food.
Last Man Standing Competition
This competition is as the name sounds, “Last Man Standing”. We will have a giant game of Dodgeball, every player who can, will get on the court and we will have two teams composed of every player from every team (if the math is right for roughly 20 players for each team) then we will have 120 players split into two teams (no full team will play on one side as it gives you a chance to team up with other players from other teams.). We will use a minimum of 20 balls. Every time someone is hit or caught they will have to leave the court. Catches will not bring back in teammates. If a team eliminates everyone from the opposing team then we (I) will divide up those remaining on the court from the winning team into 2 teams and continue in this format until there is only one man remaining. The Last Man Standing wins a trophy! So this competition will be the lighthearted part of the afternoon as everyone can play Dodgeball without strategy or shot clock!
Officiating!
Due to the fact that officiating is always a gripe for every game in the entire sports world we will attempt to do the best we can. If any team has a problem with that the head ref of that game can not deal with, then I will attempt to resolve the issue. If I can not decide I will take into my confidence two team captains who are not currently playing and we will decide that way. Everything will be handled as fairly as possible. My policy is this in regards to a call, if it’s questionable, do the honorable thing. I will tell the officials to err on the side of a hit than a dodge. (I like to play things fairly and go with the forgive the basketball term “Jump Ball” (I am from Kentucky), if one team has a questionable call go to them, then I will give the next 50-50 call to the other team.
Concessions
There will be a concessions stand there that way if a player is getting extremely hungry then they can go buy a candy bar! If you have any requests let me know and we will try and accommodate. We will have Pizza, Gatorade, Water, Pop, Candy Bars, Chips, Popcorn (hopefully), Athletic Tape (per roll) and Ibuprofen.
Shirts
There will also be a shirt stand that will sell tournament shirts for $10 a pop. Each team will receive a shirt for every player participating. If you are planning on being over 20 then I will charge only what the shirt cost. (Hit me up for the exact cost).
Entry Fee
The entry fee for each team to enter the tournament is $100. Please pay Zac Brown (myself) or Thomas Kidd. We will ask you to sign a paper confirming you have paid.
Arrival Time
Each team is expected to show up a minimum of 45 minutes before their first event. (Miami will have to needs to be there around 11:45 if they want food but before 12:15 for the Last Man Standing Competition. Which will give everyone plenty of time to warm-up and will keep us from having a Captain’s Meeting before the first match. I will meet with every Captain before their first match, if they have any questions feel free to text me beforehand or meet with me their.
Locker Rooms
Due to the fact we are playing in a smaller venue we can only offer three male locker rooms and one female. I am going to partner two teams into each male locker room. I apologize for this inconvenience, and if there are any special requests I can address I will. Teams will be able to store their gear in each room, however, I do not suggest bringing valuables. (Although one of the locker rooms will offer lockers that can be locked, but for that to work you have to bring your own lock.)
Departing Thought
I am really excited to have this tournament and UK will try its best to be a great host. Feel free to ask me any question!

Is it just me? Or do these Kentucky schools know how to host a tournament!

Thank you for everyone that made the trip. We are glad that the tournament went extremely well with the exception of UL not showing up or letting us know in advance. UK tried to take everyone's requests into account.
Sadly, I do not remember who won the last man standing award...if someone can help me out with that it would be great. I enjoyed it to where we had it down to two men and everyone surrounded the last two players for the gladiator duel.
In order for me to attempt to make the tournament fair in regards to UL not showing up or indicating that they were not going to be there we sat for one of the games awaiting their arrival. Because of that Miami was shortchanged a game and every team was inconvenienced. I spoke with all of the captains and in order for this to work we awarded every team a 1-0 DQ win against UL with the exception of Miami-we decided to give them two because they didn't get the opportunity to play another match + it was the only way to get the bracket rearranged at that point in time. (We were a couple of matches into the day before we agreed that they were not going to arrive.
The scores for the day are... UK-JMU 3-2 (OT) JMU-BGSU 3-2 Kent-Miami 5-1 BGSU-UK 3-2 (OT) Kent-JMU 4-2 UK-Miami 4-2 Kent-BGSU 3-0 Kent-UK 3-0 Miami-UL 1-0 DQ Miami-UL 1-0 DQ BGSU-UL 1-0 DQ Kent-UL 1-0 DQ JMU-UL 1-0 DQ UK-UL 1-0 DQ
Which leaves the day's overall matches as... Kent-5-0 UK-3-2 JMU-2-2 BGSU-2-2 Miami-2-2 UL-0-6
Well I am officially tired...I'll read this tomorrow and correct anything I made a mistake of...as well of more details if anyone asks something in particular.

The overtime game with JMU was a complete knock out. The BGSU was a one man difference.

The Kent-BGSU game was only 3-0, same as Kent-UK.

Tournament was fantastic. It was great to start meeting the mid-westerners, hopefully we get to see most of you come to Harrisonburg in about a month!
