November 24th, 2013.
1st Game 1:15 GVSU JV 5-0 over DU
2nd Game 2:30 GVSU 9-0 over DU
Pros:
Our group got more experience. We played in the GVSU Invite a month ago and took on BGSU & SHU. In the standings, we have played 3 games (excluding 1 being GVSU JV).
Cons:
Officiating:
Since there was no 3rd party school there, a lot of GVSU JV crossed the Attack Line without getting called out. For the GVSU game, it was much better. There were also missed calls on guys who would get tagged out on their foot if not slightly higher and they did not leave the game.
We want people from other schools or Alumni to assist in officiating if not be the primary head referee. We were talking with teams for a couple weeks about hosting this tournament. Hopefully in the future, we will have a neutral party help out more with officiating like at veteran institutions.
Shot clock counters:
We had a hard time hearing the shot counter. They did a good job counting but we wanted someone or people to count with them because the voice was low. They rotated people in and out so that helped out both teams.
Sportsmanship:
As a young team, we are going to have individuals who have a hard time with losing, getting out, and whatever else. Guys are going to get vocal and say the wrong things. Guys are going to get emotional. I apologize on behalf of our guys. It's hard to manage people, especially as a young new team trying to develop and build with lack of experience.
As a veteran team, you would expect more from veteran players and a veteran team. There were a few times where guys would throw and get a player out and the player tagged would raise their hand and walk off the court not looking. Once their arms were raised, guys would still throw at them, although knowing that's the universal signal of surrendering or someone who just got tagged out. This happened during both games with young players and veteran players.
With the circumstances at hand, the score was realistic. Overall, we hope everyone had fun. Hope to see you clubs in the future.
