Just so we are clear on the rules everyone, because some people did not seem to know.
V(d)(iii)(3) - Resetting the Shot Clock
a. In order to reset the shot clock, a player must make a throw at a player on the opposing team. This throw should be in range for the player to make a play on it. That play may be a step and a lunge (in any direction) to catch the ball. b. If a team does not make a legitimate throw to reset the shot clock, that team’s shot clock referee does not have to notify the team and should keep counting on pace. c. Shot clock referees may use their discretion on throws that can be plainly seen to have the intention of hitting the player (e.g. A player intends to grip throw but the grip slips and the player ends up spiking the ball far short of the targeted player)
referring to "c" specifically, an attempted throw that sails, spikes, or heads out of bounds technically can be called a throw, so let the ref decide from now on eh? Secondly:
V(a)(iii)(1) - False Start
1.If a player enters the field of play before the referees whistle the team captain is removed from play. If the team captain is not on the court, one of the alternate captains on the court will be removed from play. The offending team is allowed to choose which alternate captain is to be removed from play. If the team captains and alternate captains are not on the court, the offending team shall choose any player currently on the court to be removed from play. a.If the false start is very close to the whistle and the whistle was blown then play will continue as normal with the team captain removed from play. If the team captain is not on the court, one of the alternate captains will be removed from play. The offending team is allowed to choose which alternate captain is to be removed from play. If the team captains and alternate captains are not on the court, the offending team shall choose any player currently on the court to be removed from play. b.If the false start is well before the whistle, the referee may hold off on the whistle while the team captain is removed from play. If the team captain is not on the court, one of the alternate captains will be removed from play. The offending team is allowed to choose which alternate captain is to be removed from play. If the team captains and alternate captains are not on the court, the offending team shall choose any player currently on the court to be removed from play. c.A player does not enter the field of play until they come in contact with the court in bounds.
"If the team captains and alternate captains are not on the court, the offending team shall choose any player currently on the court to be removed from play."
Please do not volunteer to ref or argue about the rules if you do not know the rules. We need to address this in future games before the game starts.
Overall, great job to all three teams today. Things could have been different but you learn as you go I suppose. Can't wait to see you both at MSU again, have a wonderful holiday.

There's a fundamental issue re: resetting a shot clock because the officials are always going to error on the side of continuous play. Counting through a non-legitimate throw is one thing that officials can do, but the way the rule is worded is essentially going to allow intentional non-throws.
In practice, if you have the intent of "re-setting the shot clock", you don't have to throw a catchable ball to make it re-set, because the intent to reset the shot clock is obvious. We're asking too much of our refs to tell a team that their player's throw specifically designed to reset the shot clock is not a throw that should re-set the shot clock.
My point is this: if we want to compel a team to actually make a catchable throw, we should re-write the rule to actually force the throw to be catchable. The easiest way to do this is to force some sort of a defensive move to reset the shot clock. Any dodge, block attempt, drop-and-catch attempt, or actual catch/attempt. It's not the only way: we could force the ball to actually hit something. I mean, it's dodgeball after all.
The alternative is to continue allowing referee's judgments to reset the shot clock, meaning that two hoppers can reset the clock as long as that was the intention of the throw. Which makes the game really, really boring.
