So all this talk lately got me thinking... Do we really need a commissioner?
I guess it is a good time to talk about this, since we no longer have one, since Bomis departed for the world we all fear: life after dodgeball.
Don't worry, I'm not here to bash or praise the job that Bomis did, I just want to create some discussion. Though, of course if you want my thoughts, send a facebook message. ;D
1. How do we decide on the commissioner? In the podcast, they said they are going to have who wants to run announced on the Saturday night of Nationals, and on Sunday each team will submit one vote.
This isn't all the bad of an idea, but I think we can do better, and here is how.
A. Have hopeful commissioners declare their intentions by Feb. 1.
B. Have each hopeful commissioner come up with a platform, and post it on the website, forums for everyone to read.
C. Interview each one on the podcasts.
D. Have each candidate have their own Q and A topic in the forum where people can ask questions on how they would handle a situation. (Last 3 should be done by March 15).
This way everyone knows what they are voting for. Some will want to focus on fun, some will want structured schedules, some will promise to improve officiating, some will want to focus on only using legal players and someone will try to mandate every player wears waffle house hats.
2. How do we vote?
They said each team will have one vote in the podcast. I think that each team should have at least one vote, but I also worry about new teams tossing in an uneducated vote and effecting the outcome. (Though, this could be solved with point 1).
Why not let teams that have been around longer have 2 or 3 votes? (not saying I'm in favor, just tossing it out there).
Why not let everyone in the league vote? I like this option best, but the only problem is you would probably not have a closed ballot. You could include your name, your school, and your vote. Make a deadline by April 1, and you have your new commish before nationals.
3. What does the commissioner do?
I think that this is where Bomis ran in to trouble. He kept saying he wasn't going to do anything but help us run our selves basically, so when he stepped in and did something, he got accused of things. I think the job of commissioner should have a set list responsibilities. That way, when they step in to make a decision it is not only expected, but accepted as well.
You would also need to include things like, how to vote them out of office, and how long their term lasts for and if he has a board under him or not.
Do we need a commissioner? If yes, then hopefully you read everything above... If not, well here are a few other ideas.
First take... let's not have a commissioner at all, we are all adults, we can figure all this out as we go right?
I don't think this one works too well, we tried it in the past in the first few years of the league and it created a lot of difficulty in getting things done.
Second take, let's have a board of decision makers, that way its not up to one person to make everyone happy.
This could work, but like the commissioner, the board would need guidelines to follow.
Lastly, I don't think the league is going to die just because Bomis decided he didn't want to stick around. Do we have some important decisions to make as an organization? Absolutely... Is it going to crumble to dust just because we lost the "Grandfather" of dodgeball? That's just stroking Bomis' ego...
My biggest problem with Bomis being commissioner was that it was a job that was just kind of flung out there on the board, and Bomis said he would do it so he did. Who is going to take something like that seriously? In order for the role of commissioner to be taken as seriously as it should be, he or she needs to be voted in to a defined position. I think had this been done from the start, Bomis probably would have been voted in and he would probably still be here. (Not saying whether I would have wanted that or not....)
Sorry for being so long, but God Bless everyone this Christmas and in the New Year.
