The second matches of the season are this weekend, and they're a biggie. As far as I know MSU hasn't won in Saginaw (at least not in my time at State) and SVSU has probably the second best home court advantage (behind GVSU, but it's real close). BGSU is a solid team who has a good chance of being the best team in Ohio this season. We're bringing almost everyone back, but we're going to be down a couple of players this weekend.
Who you got?

I don't believe MSU played @ SVSU during my time, so I think the Spartans are oh fer. I'll go one step further (Stein I hope you're reading this): SVSU has the largest home court advantage in college dodgeball. It might be that I was around when dodgeball first hit GVSU and the wow factor of the crowd was larger, but I have been by the Cardinal arena once or twice in more recent times and I liken it to playing in the Swamp - like Florida football, SVSU's fans are right up on the court and will let you have it all game long. Players will get distracted and make mistakes because of it. I wish State could pack them into their stands just once. An email to the Izzone directors as prep for the MDC may be in order.

This will definitely be a very interesting match up. In my experience of playing MSU and SVSU over the years it has become obvious to me that MSU is a dark horse. For years they've been shrouded by GVSU, SVSU, and CMU but after comparing them from years past I think their program is going to be a very strong one this year. I'm not entirely sure just how many players MSU graduated last year. Ian is there, Sam is there, Malnor is there, Big K is there (#24 I have no idea how to spell his name) as well as MSU's great communication. What MSU may lack in individual talent, they make up with in team unity.
SVSU on the other hand has always been one of the fearsome four; GVSU, SVSU, CMU, and OSU. They're a team that's well established, always makes it to the final four if not the championship game at nationals and boy do they have individual talent. I'm not entirely sure who they lost last year, but my guess is that they lost Murph, Curtis, Schian, and a couple others. MSU better get themselves ready though because SVSU home court advantage is a scary one. The gym is small with brick walls behind which benefit stronger throwing teams such as SVSU (rollback factor after throws), the dodgeball team seems to have a cult following at SVSU (I mean what else are ya gonna do out in Sagnasty?) so their gym is always filled with their fans. They heckle nonstop, they call you every name in the book and even make editions to the book itself, and they will demoralize you. Who cares if they don't know the rules, they sure don't, they'll call you out regardless so expect MSU to lose some moral from this battle. Not to mention this is the first game of the year folks. Expect not only SVSU fans to be fired up, but also the players. I remember that fateful game last year where GVSU lost their first game in FOUR YEARS. That's right, this is the team that knocked the (at that time) most feared dodgeball team in the league down a couple pegs. The MSU and SVSU game will be one of the best games this season in my opinion. These two teams are so close in skill that my vote goes to SVSU because of the home court advantage, but it would sure be interesting to watch.
BGSU is another team that is very much up and coming. Sadly, I can't even remember if GVSU has ever played BGSU before. But from what I have seen they have managed to snag a couple individual players that can bring some heat. In my opinion BGSU will lose both games to MSU and SVSU. But BGSU should not be discouraged if this should happen. This would be a great advantage for them to see what two of the best dodgeball schools in the nation look like up close. From what I've seen in the past BGSU has always struggled with communication and team work. MSU excels greatly in communication whereas SVSU excels in court utilization. MSU has typically been a team that throws from the front line as a team and SVSU has been a team that uses the back line, transition, as well as the front line. BGSU should use this chance to study these teams techniques and adapt it to their own game.
To sum it up: SVSU: 2-0 MSU: 1-1 BGSU: 0-2
Good luck, stay safe, and most of all have fun this weekend.

We played BGSU last year at Eastern Jimmy, but I don't think you made it to that one.
I am going to put my money on MSU to win this one though. It seems like every time I see them play they are getting better and better. Their improvement from the MDC to Nationals was almost enough to take GV out of the final game against CMU.
Saginaw is good, don't get me wrong, but they graduated some key players last year and might be struggling a little in the first game due to transition of leadership and play style. Bowling Green sounds like they got some new talent and still have most of their veterans around to run the show, so expect them to surprise teams this year.
I have MSU for the win, but it's a good possibility that this series of games could end up with everyone 1-1

In no way did we "cruise" to victory today over BGSU...they played their hearts out and almost took another point from us (we had one player left at the final buzzer) they're a very good team (probably the best or second best team from Ohio if I had to rank them somewhere.) They have some solid throwers and some very good catchers, and they cross a ton which was getting some of our guys out. They're a very good squad, and I look forward to hopefully playing them again at our tournament in November.
Saginaw came back and had 3 or 4 really good points against us, it definitely wasn't a game that we blew even though we were up 2-1 at the half, Saginaw just played really well in the second half. It was a heck of a match, not as good as the CMU-GVSU championship game last year but it was a good one. Spencer's got a good team there.
Thanks to SVSU to holding the matches, it was a good start of the season for the northern teams.

I saw someone from SVSU recording above the court, so Spencer should have something uploaded sometime. He's usually pretty good about that stuff.
