How did each of you guys get your logos for your teams? I'm having a difficult time trying to come up with a cool one without ripping off of someone else ideas.

DePaul's wordmark logo is a pretty straightforward athletic inspired script. It matches our schools's official script logos to the best we can without getting in trouble with the licensing department. I basically put free athletic text on about twenty degrees of slant, then gave it a blue and black outline. The colors we used are official DePaul Athletic pantones. Our dodgeguy is an original, handmade design created for the club 7-8 years ago. It helps to know how specific you could get in a design, and what you can get away with by talking to your club sports director or someone like that. VCU has a pretty extensive graphic manual. See if you can use the Ram logo or old VSU Ram's logos or stylized rams. Decide if you want to create a dodgeball element to it. Those preproduction decisions will steer the design into either a graphic or type based design. There's only a few member-teams that have actually created logos. A few got lucky and were able to use the school athletic logos and just add dodgeball underneath (BG, MSU, Kentucky...). In a newsletter email earlier this season i extended the invitation for any team that wants a logo made can come to me. I'll make a print company friendly vector for $10-$15. It's a nice thing to add to the portfolio and i love doing athletic logos.

Starting from scratch is always rough - you don't really know the personality of your team yet, you're trying to come up with something that has broad appeal, and as Zig pointed out you often need to get through the school licensing department, or at least not tick them off with blatant violations of brand standards. If you're talking uniforms, I would suggest thinking about shirt style first. A football jersey is different than a basketball jersey is different than a hockey jersey, etc, and more to the point they all have different conventions - numbers on the sleeves, giant logo dead center, team name instead of a logo, what have you. As far as logos themselves, ripping off by directly copying can be a turnoff. Copy/pasting the Dodge RAM logo onto a black shirt would probably not be received all that well by teammates or for that matter Chrysler. At the same time, taking a ram logo, sticking it in a dodgeball, drawing a few motion lines, and putting "DODGEBALL" underneath it takes something pretty standard and changes it enough to keep it interesting and original. If you've got someone who can really design well (e.g. Zig) you might have the VCU Ram throwing a dodgeball, getting hit by a dodgeball, whatever. Later, as the team develops and grows, you might have a meme or slogan or something else of significance that you want to incorporate, like DePaul's UNDEFEATED moniker. tl;dr: Find things that you think look cool on their own, picture them with the VCU motif, and evaluate. --edit-- Example - I was a huge anime nerd in middle school and thought the NERV logo was pretty slick. I threw together a quick VCU Dodgeball Club logo together based on that concept.

Zigmister, I may just seriously take your offer and just pay you myself because I'm not artistic and I don't know if there is someone within our organization that can draw. Cg, you are so right in everything and that design is just brilliant. Thank you very much.

Does anyone else need some team logos? I'm on a slow roll, i've been working with SV's wings and lettermark, along with a DePaul Club Football logo, and a slew of other things.
Anyone interested? VCU need one still?

Did you still have problems with the university in using the Rams logo or the phrase Rams? What kind of stuff am I able to work with?

If you get a chance, we could use a logo. I don't think we can use "Huskers," and can't use the "Athletic N" (N with "Huskers" across it).

I already vectored the plain Nebraska N (same as in your avatar) when I did the CDO poster. Would you be allowed to use that, or would you have to create your own style of N? I could also easily incorporate the N into something like Bomis' idea.
