This happened at the MDC and at practice last night so I thought I would bring it up.
Does a "canceled ball" aka- a ball that hits another ball mid air- count as a legitimate through thus resetting the shot clock?

I personally think that it should, both players are typically throwing at each other legitimately...they just both have impeccable aim! haha

I agree. This ball should be considered a legitimate throw.

I don't see why it shouldn't count. Both players made an attempt to throw the ball. Now if someone in throwing a ball with the intent to block, that is a whole different issue.

According to the rules, "3.4.2.3.2 Balls may be thrown into the flight path of a direct throw in order to make a block, but the blocking ball must make enough clearance so as not to be confused as a Loss of Possession."

The way I interpreted it is, you are allowed to throw your ball toward a ball coming at you in order to prevent it from hitting you, but it has to have a trajectory that is obvious so it doesn't look like you dropped your ball. This is to prevent those who's ball is knocked out of their hand and they argue that they threw the ball before the ball hit it. Does that help at all, or did I make it worse? Haha

Technically, two balls hitting in mid air isn't a legitimate throw, thus it would not reset the shot clock because: 3.3.4.3 Resetting the Shot Clock - To reset the Shot Clock, a Player must make a Direct Throw at the Opposing Team in a Legitimate Attempt to eliminate an Opponent. 3.3.4.3.1 Legitimate Attempt - a Direct Throw within range of a Target, which may allow the Target to make a play on said Direct Throw. This range may be up to a step and a lunge in any of the 3 dimensions, in order to make a Direct Catch. A Target does not have to make a play in order for the Direct Throw to be considered a Legitimate Attempt, but may only be within the previously specified range.
If the balls strike each other out of range of the legitimate attempt zone, then the shot clock would not reset and both balls would be "dead". I think this is something we should add to 3.3.4.3. Maybe add this: 3.3.4.3.2 Exception: The Shot Clock is also reset if two Balls from opposing teams strike each other in midair and both throws appear to have the intent to enter the Legitimate Attempt Zone of an opposing player.
