I am proposing a rule that reads something along the lines of "If there are greater than 2 teams playing at a venue, the head ref of any game shall not have an affiliation with either of the two teams playing."
This weekend at Saginaw, there was a SVSU alumni who was the head ref for all of the games. He did a good enough job, but there was a point in the SVSU vs CMU game that he overturned a call made by the 3 GV refs that could have had a significant impact on the game in CMU's favor. His only argument for overturning the call was that he was the head ref and therefore he overruled everyone else.

OMG. YES. YOU READ MY F***ING MIND. Never again will I play a game with this kid as a referee, assistant referee, or counter in my life.

It's not even that he didn't know all the rules. He had an affiliation with a team that was playing and that is enough to have a bias for them, even if it is not a conscious bias. The main point is that he did not need to be head ref so he should not have been it.

I think that is definitely a fair rule to add for next season. Or at least one we can discuss further for consideration.

This should be a given for all teams. There should never be a head ref that is an alumni of one of the teams participating in said match.

Well I wouldn't say never, because usually when there are only two teams playing at a location an alumni ref us is the only option

I'm just saying head ref should never be an alumni. I think they can count or be an assistant. I just don't like the idea of a former player making critical calls for their former team.

We had the JV and Varsity Game yesterday. There were several blown calls. Tried to get some Michigan players out there, no luck this weekend. Still went alright though.

This should be a given for all teams. There should never be a head ref that is an alumni of one of the teams participating in said match. I completely disagree with this. I would rather have a alumni as head ref no matter what team they are reffing/are from. Its impossible to expect teams to try to get quality refs from long distances away just to ref games in the regular season. For example a game with CMU/SVSU. Are we to try and get a MSU ref to drive all the way to Saginaw? Who would do that for maybe $15 pay at the max. Sounds like CMU got a raw deal, I wish I would of seen this earlier so we could of discussed it. However I will take an alumni ref with experience over a scared/clueless JV player any day.
