New Ranking System Proposal
By: Nick Johnson
This proposed system is created to offer a fair Day 1 of Nationals that rewards teams who play more games than the to-be-determined average amount, but does not punish teams who are unable to meet this average. There are 5 criteria I am proposing we use to help create the schedule and match-ups for days 1 and 2 of Nationals.
Criteria 1 – “The Introduction of Points”
This proposed system is created to increase travel and variety of teams played. This proposed system gives one point for each win a team accumulates, and half a point is given for an overtime loss. There is no punishment or reward for teams losing a game. This proposed method is different from the current “Hockey System” because in the “Hockey System” two points are awarded for a win and one point is given for an overtime loss. In the current “Hockey System” a team just has to beat a weaker team repeatedly and can get a higher seed. As shown in the past at Nationals, the Michigan Region has had a team ranked lower because they have just lost to the better Michigan teams.
As discussed by many players, the Michigan Region is equivalent to the SEC in NCAA football. This prevents teams from continuously scheduling games against weaker teams and getting a higher ranking due to less competitive wins, as opposed to a team that continuously losses to top 4 teams. This creates fairness because some teams are not able to travel as much as others, and some teams can just choose to play against newer or developing teams in order to accumulate more wins to earn a higher seed. Now, you are definitely thinking this is going to end up being the same as the current “Hockey System”, but rest assured the remaining four criteria below will set it apart. The remaining criteria will be used to reward teams for different categories, which will help the league to become more competitive and grow.
This chart is an example of Win Points being awarded for wins and overtime losses a team accumulates.
Criteria 2 – “Regional Points”
On March 1st, a month before Nationals, the rankings for each region will be used to determine the amount of Regional Points earned for each team in their respective regions. Any games played after this cut off date in the region will not affect how many Regional Points a team earns. Teams finishing first in their region will receive an added bonus as a reward. Some regions are inevitably tougher than others but Criteria 3 will help the teams competing in the tougher regions. This helps recognize teams that do well in their region; rewarding them for winning games against teams they see more often than others. This proposed system recognizes regions like the NCAA recognizes conferences. “Johnson Points” are awarded in the region based on your regional ranking. First Place receives 7 Johnson pts, Second Place receives 5 Johnson pts, Third Place receives 3 Johnson pts, Fourth Place receives 2 Johnson pts, Fifth Place or lower receives 1 Johnson pt. Looking below you can ask why Teams A and D have the same amount of Johnson points? That is because they both had the same record in the region so the reward goes to both of them. There can be two First/Second/Third/etc Places in the region.
Criteria 3 – “Travel Points”
Criteria 3 is focused on rewarding teams that travel and win, the teams that play outside of their region need to receive a bonus for using their money and time. This focuses on a team’s record competing against teams out of their region, whether it is by hosting a tournament or visiting one. NCAA Basketball ranks a team’s strength of schedule by using the games a team played out of their conference, thus rewarding the travel and chance of playing a new team and winning. This Criteria focuses on the teams having more wins, instead of focusing on a team’s win percentage. Below, Team D might argue they had only one loss compared to the two Team B received, but Team B won more games, even if their overall record is not as spectacular, they beat different teams out of their region which rewards them in this specific criteria. This is why there are many different criteria, they are to cover all bases and give extra notice to things such as travel.
Criteria 4- "Cup Points"
Teams that compete in Cups for their Region such as the Michigan Dodgeball Cup, Ohio Dodgeball Cup, and the East Coast Brawl will receive Cup Points because they won their regional tournament. Regions that do not have a cup will receive points but not as many points as the teams that competed in the cups would receive. Teams that do not compete in cups will receive Johnson pts instead of Cup points; their overall record will be used in place of the regional tournament because some regions cannot get all the teams together at the same time, such as the Kentucky and Illinois regions. This creates motivation for regions that do not have an annual cup to find a way and create this type of tournament, showing respect to regions and teams that come together and make a tournament to earn a Cup. This 4th Criteria, recognizes teams for winning a tournament when bragging rights truly count.
Criteria 5
After adding all the Regional, Travel, and Cup Johnson Points a team has earned during the season they will receive their rankings for the first day of Nationals, if teams are tied in Johnson Points the teams Win Percentages will be compared, the team with the higher win percentage will receive the higher seed. If the teams are still tied after comparing Johnson Points, and the two Win Percentages, Travel Points will be used to break the tie, then Cup Points. If one team has Cup Points and another team does not have Cup Points, the team with Cup Points receives the higher seed. If both still have the same amount of Cup Points then the team with the lease amount of losses will receive the higher seed. If after all of the points, win percentages, and losses are compared and there is still a tie, then if the two teams have played that current season the team that won that game will receive the higher seed, if the teams had played multiple times and have the same record against each other, a coin will be flipped and both teams will be designated a side and whoever wins the flip will receive the high seed. That has the highest seed will receive the higher seed. The Snake System will be used to create the initial pool play match ups. This is based off of 16 team nationals
Now, to answer the concern about how Day 1 of Nationals will effect the seed for Day 2. It is based off of how you finish in your Pool during Day 1; this will determine how many points your team earns for Day 2 and the seed.
For 4 team pools For 5 team pools
1st place 13 pts. 1st place 15 pts.
2nd place 8 pts. 2nd place 10 pts.
3rd place 4 pts. 3rd place 6 pts.
4th place 1pt. 4th place 3pts.
5th place 1 pt.
The rewards of the place you finish on day one can drastically affect the Day 2 rankings that way teams get new match ups as well as a higher significance to Day 1 play.
These five criteria want teams to play out of state or host tournaments that bring in teams from other regions. As well as rewarding teams to go out and just play to have fun, this also sets up future expansion of the league and creates a more solid ranking system.
I had been on this for a few weeks getting advice from other people, and Felix has helped me with it because we both care about the league deeply and we want it to succeed. So please share what you think if you think it is great or how you think it can be improved.
