In the midst of the vote for NCDA Chief of Content, I have a few ideas to explain in regards to NCDA Content. These are some ideas that the new Chief of Content (either Sean Smith or myself) should look into:
POST-SEASON AWARDS
I think the NCDA is at the point where we can begin giving out awards to players at the end of the regular season much like varsity college athletics do. My idea is that at the end of the regular season, the league conducts a vote to determine who deserves certain awards such as (League MVP, Rookie of the Year, Best Catcher, Best Thrower, Most Improved, Comeback Player of the Year, etc.).
The winners would be determined before the National Tournament ideally. It would be similar to how NCAA Football gives out the Heisman and all other positional awards in December before all the bowl games are played.
Another idea regarding the awards would be to name a few of them after former NCDA players. Sort of like the Heisman Trophy. Thoughts on who deserves their name connected to an award like League MVP or Comeback Player of the Year?
ALL-NCDA = ALL-AMERICAN TEAM
One thing that should DEFINITELY be done to legitimize our "All-NCDA Team" / "All Nationals Team" is to name it the All-American Team (sort of like what any other college sport does).
No disrespect to the person/group of people who came up with the idea to have the All-Nationals team in the first place (I love the idea), but changing the name to All-American Team would just be a step in the direction of College Dodgeball being recognized as a more legitimate college sport, not to mention being able to call yourself an All-American sounds cooler. For the All-American Team, I have no issue with it being decided after Nationals, what do you guys think?
"Rookie of the Month" Award
This isn't exactly on the topic of Post-Season Awards, but Sean Smith brought this idea up to the content team a while ago: Along with the NCDA awarding a "Baller of the Month" award, there should be a monthly award for rookies, since it is not likely any first year player will receive the high distinction of BOTM.
I propose that team captains would nominate player(s) on their team (or a team they played) and at the end of the month the content team would decide on which nominated player deserves the award.
This would not only keep those rookies interested in the NCDA and more likely to stick with dodgeball, it would also give the league a look at what young players are doing well, because let's face it, the NCDA is a bit of a popularity contest when it comes to who are the top players on each team. If you are well known, you are very well known, and if you aren't getting the recognition you deserve, it's hard to get your name out there unless you totally dominate at a certain tournament.
So there are a few of my ideas. Feel free to comment with any ideas of your own. The goal here is to legitimize the NCDA from a content standpoint, and Post-Season / All-American Awards are a step in the right direction in my opinion.
