Is there any consensus or at least an idea of how we are going to determine the standings for Nationals this year? From the best of my knowledge the determination of the seeds for Sunday's tournament play have changed each of the last three years. I wasn't here for Nationals in 2012, but from what I could determine Saturday's games accounted for 80% of the seeding while the season accounted for 20%. Then in 2013, under the NHL-style points format, Saturday's games were worth 7 points. Each team played three games for a potential total of 21 points, which equaled half of Kent State's point total for the year. Last year I believe we used some combination of NHL and RPI formulas, but to be honest I have no idea how the seeds were determined. I thought we (MSU) were the six seed last year until I looked at the 2014 records document and discovered we were the 11 facing the 6 seed UWP, who we beat on Saturday at Nationals and had more points than during the season. In addition, there was a lot of debate last year regarding the pools and Saturday's worth in determining the seeds for Sunday, which further added to the confusion.
My point being is there seems to be no system nor explicit policy in place for determining how the bracket is made for Sunday. I know several people have proposed different ways to create standings or construct how Nationals is run. I just think it is better to start to have an official discussion of how Nationals will take place now in November than in April a week before the tournament, like we did last year. I understand the need to change the way we determine standings due to the change in the nature of the league. The most games played in 2012 was 22, and then the next highest was 15. In a semester this year, CMU has played 24 matches, and MSU and GVSU have played 21 and 20 respectively. The league is growing with more teams and more games, which is all the more reason for an increase in the need for clarity regarding Nationals.
So if anyone, maybe Zig being the President of the league or Nick Johnson as the Director of Nationals, can offer any insight, that would be great.
