Okay, so something happened in the National Title game that I'm not going to get into. Long story short, Team A was on a 10 count, shot clocker suddenly stops counting aloud until he gets to 9 and then says 9! 10! Balls over!
This cannot happen. ESPECIALLY when the first thing he reaches for to defend himself is that "no where in the rule book does it say the shot clock has to be counted out loud".
Uh what? Thankfully, this didn't actually impact the outcome of the game, but if it were in a situation where it was tied, or against a team that wasn't as nice as Team B (who agreed to reset the shot clocks and no balls over), team A would have REALLY gotten screwed over! Apparently this is something that needs to be addressed since common sense has no place in our league.
Now, my opinion, the rule would ideally and reasonably be that the shot clocker shouldn't have to count aloud until there are a minimum of 6 seconds left on the shot clock (IE - [counting up] the clock gets to 5 on a 10 count, 10 on a 15 count).
Thanks!

Wes, this incident was just an official's mistake and an incorrect implementation of a defined mechanic.
Here's the situation from my perspective (I was directly adjacent to each Shot Clock official): At first, I thought the Timekeeper was counting a fifteen second clock because I heard counting verbally at eight with the 5 man rule in effect. As the Assistant Official it's my duty to keep the Timekeepers in good time and using good mechanics. Within the next second I could see there was some sort of officiating issue, so at Nine I stopped play under an Official's Timeout to resolve the situation (likely under 3.4.7.1 Timer Malfunction).
After having an Official's conference, we determined both Shot Clocks be reset on malfunction grounds, and I reviewed the correct mechanics with both officials.
This rule is already in the rulebook: 4.3.3.4.4 Signaling the Last 5 - When the count reaches the last 5 seconds remaining in the Shot Clock, the Official shall vertically raise the hand not holding the timepiece. The Official visibly counts off the seconds by bringing the hand back down over their chest, then back up to vertical to signal a second. The Official shall also verbalize the Count, loud enough to be heard by the Team.

That's a lot different than I recall that happening. Good to know it is a rule though!

Missed the reference to the National Title game and instinctively went, "Oh god, did I screw up? I screwed up, didn't I. Dangit!"
Unsure if there's a mechanic on point (just checked, there isn't), but when acting as an official opposite the shotclock officials I'll silently mimic the active shotclock official. With two visual cues and an auditory cue, there isn't much excuse for a team missing it.
Just once I would like to see a game with actual shot clocks and buzzers to see the potential impact.

The issue with what happened was that there were no cues from the shot clocker at all until he suddenly shouted 9, Bomis.
