After reading all the massive amounts of posting on this site, and being able to sit back and think about the game Saturday, I am ready to speak my mind about all of this. Keep in mind this is all coming from me, Spencer "Most Loved Player in the league" Jardine
First, I would also like to point out again all of this could of been avoided if people would just read the d**n rulebook. I know I am the more crazy dedicated types in the league, so I will be the first to admit its a little sad I have the rule book memorized. I don’t know who the hell thought that the trap rule was considered a team catch, but it seemed all 3 teams did Saturday. That was sad on itself.
Or even the definition of a throw. "A player must be able to take a step/lunge and be able to make a play on the ball" Not the rule word for word, but that’s what it is. As the footage will show when we get it, Stein and I BOTH made throws on CMU players. Mine landed in front of a CMU player who had almost dove for it and most certainly could of made a play on it, and Steins was BLOCKED. Yet we where called for a shot clock violation. As the most beloved player in the NCDA and the coolest headed guy in the world even I threw a curse word in the direction of the ref that day. I have yet to meet 5 or 6 people who agree on the correct definition of a valid throw, even on my own team. And it was clear to me the refs who worked the CMU/SVSU game did not either. It would go a long way for teams to take a copy of the rule book and read it to their teams.
As far as legit reffing is concerned, I would just like to point out the CMU vs MSU game. The refs in that game was Max, a 4 year player, as head ref. Myself as the other head ref. Bryan our 4 year captain as one shot counter, and one of our freshman who knows what hes doing as the other. As well as 2 year players as line judges and assistant refs. That game will probably go down as the best reffed game so far this year. Why? Because me and Max know the f**king rules! And Bryan and the other shot counter knew what the definition of a "throw" was. And we all knew how to stick to our calls. Example, a play that occurred in front of me was the case of a bobbled ball that a CMU player had fumbled grazing the floor before gaining control of it. I called him out on it, the second he and his team tired to argue it I stuck to my call and told him not to argue and get off the court. He immediately left the court and play continued. That was the end of it. Another play occurred when two players where fighting over a ball on the opening rush. Knowing the rules I told them both to drop the ball where its at and back away to their baselines. The ball was placed on the ground, both players walked away un injured and not wanting to kill each other. Immediately after I had two separate people tell me I made the wrong call, 1. Saying both players should be out and the other 2. They should have been allowed to fight over it. Again another example of people who don’t have the rules down. The game went off with out a hitch, there was absolutely 0 arguments and every player walked away from the game happy, knowing the result of the game was due to the actual play on the court not the manor in which it was reffed. Not to mention the confidence of knowing the refs in the game knew what they where doing. If I see the same reffing staff I did from the CMU game at the MDC I am gonna flip a s**t. No one on either team would have ANY confidence in a crew they know that doesn't have their s**t down. And no matter how the game is played or how one sided it is they will still have a bone to pick after words.
Which is why I am so disturbed by the fact someone would be banned for pointing out (Although loudly) that reffing was a problem. He did not b***h and moan that CMU had cheated, he even stated they had played a great game and beat us soundly. All he was stating was reffing played a huge part in the game, when as we all know it should never occur. Had Jim Joyce done his job and made the correct call in the bottom of the 9th not a single person in the world would know that mans name. But he blew it, and the bone I have to pick about our game is its not one call being blown, its 6 or 7 of them in a single game. SVSU had two BS shot clock violation calls, and both teams had questionable calls go against them. Only someone who doesn’t care about their team or this sport would NOT have a problem with that. He has every right to state that fact, and banning someone for attempting to point a problem out is the absolute worst way of handling the situation. Is Stein a hated man in the leuage, hell yes he is. But that doesn’t change the fact he has played the game for 4 years and knows what the hell hes talking about. You might not like him, and hate how he types in all caps too often, but he does know what hes talking about. And silencing his voice only infuriates me, my team, and those who KNOW we need better refs. (Aka the rest of the league)
Here at SVSU we raised $200 in 4 hours pumping gas for random people. At first I wanted it to go to travel cost, hotel, beer, what ever. But know I am more than willing to send that cash to what ever trained ref we can get. Even if its just 2 head refs. Did CMU beat SVSU fair and square Saturday? Yes. But I was left with a very bitter taste in my mouth knowing things could have gone a little differently.
The biggest problem in this league is NOT funding, getting more recruits, more teams, Bomis, or finding a name for the national tournament at the end of the year. Its the game itself and how it is being reffed. Not a single fan that left that gym Saturday wasn't hooked by the sport, but not a single one left with out thinking our reffing Saturday was a joke. Trust me I never heard the end of it this weekend. Parents, students, one of my proffs, my best friends, every one of them had said something about it. How can we expect to have these 4 year plans or have "higher" administrators if our own fans cant even trust or be satisfied of the out comes of the games?
Theres my rant, and if you don't know me take this into consideration, ever player in this league (Even GVSU and CMU) will back me up in saying I am the most cool headed player they will ever meet. So know that I am serious when I am irate over this whole situation.
And for the love of god......read the f**king rulebook.
