Confirmed Teams as of April 3rd University of Kentucky Michigan State University (Paid with roster) DePaul University (Paid with roster) NSULA (Paid with roster) Grand Valley State University (Paid with roster) Kent State (Paid with roster) James Madison University (Paid with roster) Wisconsin (Paid with roster) Moody (Partial Pay-no shirts without roster) SV (Paid with roster) OSU (Paid with Roster) CMU (Paid without Roster) BGSU (Paid with Roster)
Alright! I have updated the top post for everyone to see. As of April 3rd we only have 13 teams that are in Nationals so don't forget to get me everything.
THE DATES Nationals will be April 12-14th. If any schools want to get here on Friday and play 1 night game let me know. You will have 3 games between Friday night and Saturday with single elimination on Sunday.
THE COURTS As of Feb 10th we have 10 courts for our use throughout the tournament. The only problem is that 8 courts are on one side of campus and the other 2 on the other. We will try to keep everything together as much as possible.
SPEED GUN UK has a speed gun and we will have it there for everyone to use!
SHIRTS When we have all the teams registered we will start designing the shirts.
ALL STAR MATCH We have two teams already selected in the Brave Little Toasters vs. The Mon-Stars. When teams register and give me their roster I also need their All-Stars.
ALUMNI GAME AND ALUMNI REFS If you want to play in the Alumni game or ref shoot me an email at kentuckydodgeball@gmail.com. All Captains let your former players know about it!
HOTELS I have had 2 schools ask me what hotels people are staying in...you all might want to post it on here. I saw that the Red Roof Inn had rooms for under $40 last night so you all might want to start planning and grabbing the low rates.
We are wanting to have a fun tournament that is representative of what all of the teams want to do. So...let me know!

sounds awesome. I personally really like the idea of all the teams being in the same hotel, as long as we're all together on the same wing (unlike Nationals 2011 haha). Alumni refs work for MSU, the dodgeball plan sounds great but I still think teams should bring like 5 each just in case.
As far as the bracket, we're working on a RPI formula dealio where you just put the numbers into the computer and it comes out with an RPI for each team if you'd be interested. If not, I like the increase to 40%, because 20% just seems too low.

Thanks Hiller! I am definitely interested I'd just like to see how it is put together and what it would have done in regards to last year. I am planning for 20 teams and at 5 rooms a team that's 100. That will completely fill up a hotel. I am also willing to bet that if we rented an entire hotel we could get a great rate.
I'm curious to see what the other schools say on the Dodgeballs as I'd like to see some uniformity.

I love that you guys are getting a jump on this early and that you're so excited about it. I'd like to offer my opinions after just having held Nationals: 1) I think reserving an entire hotel would be great! We wanted to have an entire NCDA party, but there was no way to find a place large enough (and perhaps sound proof enough, haha) for that many people. It would be cool for everyone to get to know each other off the court though. 2) Alumni refs seems to be the way to go. SVSU has used them in regular season games and they've worked really well and there were very few complaints about alumni refs at Nationals. Alumni are going to be more invested and interested than people who are hired. 3) UK can have extra reserves of dodgeballs, but it shouldn't be just your responsibility to bring balls. They'd all essentially be the same, but UK would have the advantage of using them all season and be used to them already 4) No response, haha, I don't completely understand it as is. 5) Feeding teams can become a pain and an extra expense that really isn't necessary for UK. Teams come with extra spending money already. I don't think feeding teams is something that has to be done. 6) Some teams can't afford it and don't have the guys to commit. Teams in Michigan didn't even come to Nationals this year. 7) You mean the All-Tournament Team like Chad suggested? 8) When it comes to Nationals, there isn't much free time to explore the city and, honestly, people just want to spend time with their teammates just chillin'. 9) Seeing as I am not a captain, I decline to comment. You guys have a really good start though! I remember how excited Spencer and I were and how we were going to jump on things right away...then we didn't, haha. Hopefully you can stay on top of it!

We had A BLAST when we went to Kentucky for the UK Invite. To answer your concerns:
1. That idea for the hotels is great. I think that would be a great idea definitely to get to know some of the other teams. The only team we we're able to meet up with at the hotel was Miami, and it was only a few of them.
I'd check on the Days Inn in South Lexington. We loved staying there at this year's invite, and it was close to really good breakfast and dinner options. Even had a strip club next door called the Spearmint Rhino.
2. Seeing how this was our first experience, we don't know how other directions would be. But we enjoyed having the alumni refs. Especially McCarthy, dude's hilarious.
3. I don't mind the dodgeball idea. Sounds like a good plan to us.
4. I feel like it should be a heavier sum based on season results, but wouldn't go too drastic from this year's changes. I would say 30/70 or 40/60
5. Feeding us (in past experience) is more convenient. That way we don't have to go out of our way to find some place, wait for everyone to order and get their food, etc. It doesn't take as much time out of the schedule.
Cat's Den was a good place to eat and hang out, definitely helped to have that location.
6. You'll probably have a bigger presence from the EC than this past years nationals. We almost had the opportunity to split a charter with Maryland but it got too costly for them. Going to UK for them and Towson will be more like 9 hours rather than the 11-12 to SVSU. VCU will also be about an 8 hour ride, so they are a possibility too.
7. I think that the All-Star tees this year turned out pretty cool, I wore that one on the ride home. Speaking of the All-Star game, I liked what we did, but for some reason watching the MI v The World game seemed to be more intense, and the teams we're working more together to eliminate the other side. I would almost vote for a MI v The World rematch.
8. We we're pretty set at the Invite for places to go, I mean most teams I feel just go back, shower, and start brewing. Well at least, that's what we do.
9. Cat's den is pretty nice, like I said, Capts Meeting could definitely be done there.

...Replying without reading the above comments (i'm really busy will read later): 1. Giant hotel: Yes. We should divide party teams away from the teams that sleep. And a secret pact not to call each other on noise violations. 2. Alumni Officials who know the Rulebook, paid in cash preferably. Dedicated Officials should get a lunch and lunch break, shirt, and maybe some other swag. Officiating for 6 straight hours really really sucks. Generally. Timekeeps won't be able to shout for 6 games, so should rotate around per game. It would be better to focus on getting people sorted for Sunday, since people (like me) would go home with their teams and can't really stay. There is a greater population of teams and captains available on Saturday that can fill in. I think the 4 official system (2 timekeepers (with watches), 1 HR, and 1 AR) is the goal to strive for here. 3. I'll approach Gopher and Champion or any other company the teams would like, and see what deal they could cut us. Maybe we could put the tournament or NCDA logo on them. I don't know how much you could front, but maybe we can include a couple balls to be given to each team after Nationals as swag. That cost could be covered in the event entry fee, but you'd probably have to front that until then. 4. In the Records spreadsheet, i included a couple of different ratios on different sheets. 80 Saturday / 20 Season (2011 and 2012's format) 75 Saturday / 25 Season50 Saturday / 50 Season40 Saturday / 60 Season5. I've always gotten screwed on Nationals pizzas. No real opinion. 6. DePaul is in. Yes, we should allow as many teams that want to go. 7. Coming into the All Star Game i was in favor of having teams wear their respective team jerseys, or even doing a red vs blue that bomis brought up. But I thought giving the all stars a shirt for just being an all star was a sweet idea. I mostly liked the shirt design for the all stars, can't say the same for the event shirt but i guess i'm in the minority. WKU had great designs for Nationals, and UK had a sweet shirt for their invite last season. So I guess i'm excited for what the Commonwealth designers will come up with. (If anyone wants to do NCDA work send em over hehe) 8. Ya, but DePaul usually just stays in the hotel. However, for our Family Dinner we did use SVSU's suggestion of Famous Daves. 9. Sounds good. Beforehand, we should put together a list of points ready to discuss and or vote on. Maybe having a microphone that we can pass around would help, in past meetings i know its hard to hear everybody's comments.

I think the hotel idea is genius. Not only this way we can interact with players from other teams but we also will not have to worry about disturbing other guests in the hotel.
I thought the alumni refs did great, maybe a few more could be sufficient.
Dodgeballs another great idea because this way each team is using the same dodgeballs, to make it "fair" as possible. We had new ones and they were god awful the first few games.
I agree their should be more emphasis on the regular season's percentage.
Pizzas would be good so not everyone is leaving, ordering, and coming back, could save time. especially if it is running behind.
As for an All-Star Tournament team i feel as if the teams should be voted in so it is an All Star match. Let the league decide who they think is the best of the best and let them square off. The only down side of this is that some small schools may not get involved.
A packet of things to do in the city would be helpful, considering one time we traveled a good distance and found nothing to do.
Cats Den sounds good place to meet for the captains meeting.
All in all, sounds good what you have so far. Excited for nationals already

Also, the guys loved the speed gun this year, so I think having it there would be great. Kent does have one that they graciously let us borrow this year (thanks again Fitz!!); buying one isn't necessary.
Last point for now...what is your opinion on the all girl game? I have to put that idea in your head, haha

I'm indifferent to the girls game. If there are enough girls and interest then I'll have one!
As for the speed gun, all of our guys loved it and want to use it to see if they improve any. haha

Last point for now...what is your opinion on the all girl game? I have to put that idea in your head, haha Shorter neutral zone line. 15 ft? Reason being? I clocked you Bomis...and I throw harder, haha. Zac, SV will have 10 girls and I'm sure we'll pick up more next year. We'll have a girls team all on our own!

Shorter neutral zone line. 15 ft? Reason being? I clocked you Bomis...and I throw harder, haha. I'm not sure how I feel about this. On one hand, most of the balls that got thrown were floaters to get to the baseline, if they even got to the baseline. On the other hand it doesn't seem feasible to have to line the whole court twice for neutral zones, then have to peel the tape off before the next set of matches, for something that lasts 10, 15 minutes. I guess I'd be for it, but that's just me. Also, about the speed gun- hopefully it gets used correctly next year. I'm not saying it wasn't this year, or the year before that, or the year before that, but the speeds have been fluctuating so much it's pretty obvious that one of the years the person who's been using the gun isn't using it right. For example, Wes from UK threw what, 76 mph at WKU, but now he gets to SVSU and he throws 5 mph harder? Same with a couple of our guys, we had a guy's speed go up 7 mph compared to the last year, and this is when his arm was sore. So either there's something about playing in Michigan that makes everyone's arms stronger, everyone's arms really did get that much stronger (highly unlikely), or the gun wasn't be worked right one of the past two years.

Hiller when you watch MLB games on TV the radar guns are never the same. Max Scherzer of the Tigers was throwing 98MPH yesterday... he does NOT throw that hard. It's most likely the different gun varying in speeds.

Yes, I know Mike. But most guns that I'm aware of aren't 7+ mph off. They're usually only a couple mph off from each other. Scherzer getting clocked throwing a relatively light baseball 4 mph off his average is a lot different than an amateur athlete dialing up 7 mph more on a heavy dodgeball. I'm not criticizing anyone, I'm just saying I'd like a more standardized radar gun reading. For all I know maybe this year's results were spot on and last year's results were off, or maybe it's the other way around. We're getting a gun as well Zac, and if you'd like we could possibly bring it to Nationals and see what gun works best/help the line from getting too long for people wanting to clock their arms.
